New Direction Program

OVAHS Maternal & Child Health (MCH) Unit  is made up of

  •  Angela Geddes – Midwife
  • Helena Dowie – Child Health Nurse
  • 1 Aboriginal Liaison Officer.

The New Directions Program focuses on pregnant women and children from birth to 14 years of age with the aim of increasing access to MCH care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families.

Through funding from OATSIH “New Directions” MCH unit  provides clinical care, education to parents and community members which is aimed at growing strong healthy children. This is achieved through clinical consultation, strategic and  community based outreach education sessions.

The MCH team see patients at OVAHS clinic and are also mobile through out the community and you will see them out and about in Troup Carriers -Kev and Trev. These are fully equipped mobile clinics, which travel within Kununurra,  and surrounding communities, focusing on better health outcomes for the children living on these communities.

The MCH team focus on pregnant women and children aged 0 – 14 years.

The team work from the MCH clinic within OVAHS to access us please go through to main reception first. Home and community visits  within the Kununurra area and surrounding communities are also part of our service.

Health Education

The MCH team provide education to parents and community members, which are aimed at growing strong healthy children. This includes covering basic health needs and some preventative health measures which may stop some of our children having to suffer from things such as:

  • Nutrition
  • Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD)
  • Otitus Media
  • Preventing Anemia
  • Oral Health
  • Antenatal Health & Well being
  • Developmental Milestones

Child Health Checks

Child Health Checks are offered every year to children from 0 – 14 years; this also includes the “Healthy 4 year old Kid Check” which is required by Centrelink before children start school.

It is a complete health check that covers all areas of a child’s health and wellbeing.

Antenatal Checks

The MCH midwife offers regular antenatal care at OVAHS and follow up postnatal care after baby is born. This includes weight checks, breast feeding assistance and just to have someone to talk to. If you would like to know more about how to take care of yourself while pregnant and grow a happy, strong, health baby, have a yarn with MCH midwife.

Specialist Referrals

If your child needs to see a specialist they will first need to have a referral completed, our team is able to help you. Throughout the year, a variety of specialists visit Kununurra.  Patients are able to see them at OVAHS and the hospital. These specialists include:

  • Pediatrician (Kids Doctor)
  • Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT)
  • Pediatric Cardiology (Kids Heart Doctor)
  • Speech Therapy (Speaking and Eating)
  • Dietitian (Healthy eating)
  • Dentist (Healthy teeth)
  • Occupation therapy (Making activities easier)
  • Physiotherapy (Improving movement and function)
